An opportunity to expand the frontiers of private conservation and the Derecho Real de Conservación (DRC)!

We are proud to share that, earlier this month, we traveled to Costa Rica to hold a panel discussion and exchange of private conservation experiences at the Faculty of Law of the University of Costa Rica..

We were able to carry out this activity thanks to Tierra Austral’s receipt of the Conservation Innovation Award 2025, an award presented by the International Land Conservation Network (ILCN), the organization with which we co-organized the event together with the aforementioned university.

The workshop featured presentations by our executive director, Victoria Alonso; Manuel Dörr, director of Parque Cuenca Andina; and Juan Butazzoni, a lawyer with expertise in implementing the DRC, who shared the experience, lessons learned, and challenges of the Chilean case.

From Costa Rica, we had the participation of Sara Cascante, representing CEDARENA (Centro de Derecho Ambiental y los Recursos Naturales); Carlos Chacón, a lawyer recognized for his pioneering work in private conservation and environmental law in Costa Rica; and testimonies from landowners of the Colectivo Monteverde.

The event brought together representatives from academia, landowners, and conservation leaders, and it was an enriching opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen conservation networks. We are especially grateful to the ILCN for making it possible, and to everyone who joined this conversation!
