PARTICIPATING IN THE GLOBAL CONGRESS OF THE ILCN
Representatives of Tierra Austral, along with more than 100 attendees, will participate in the second Global Congress of the International Land Conservation Network, which will be held in Santiago in January of 2018. The Congress is called “From Communities to Countries: Visionary Conservation in a Changing World,” and Tierra Austral is deeply involved in its planning. We are particularly excited about the Congress because it will be held in Chile, and it will provide Tierra Austral with a rich opportunity to share our success on the Derecho Real de Conservacion with colleagues from around the world, especially those from Civil Code countries.
SEMINAR AT THE 2017 LAND TRUST ALLIANCE RALLY (Denver, USA)
Tierra Austral joined other key leaders of the efforts to secure the passage of the Derecho Real de Conservacion, in making a presentation at the national Land Trust Rally. Participants in the panel presentation included: Michael Grasty from the Grasty Quintana Majlis law firm; Roberto Peralta from the Peralta Gutierrez Asociados law firm; Tierra Austral Board members Victoria Alonso and Henry Tepper; Pancho Solis, Director of the Pew Charitable Trust’s new program in Chile; and Jim Levitt from the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy and International Land Conservation Network, who served as the moderator. The presentation was well-attended and well-received by an audience comprised of both US conservation practitioners and representatives of the new European Land Conservation Network (ELCN).
FORUM FOR LAWYERS AND PRIVATE SECTOR REPRESENTATIVES
Tierra Austral participated in an event hosted by the Pro Bono Foundation, which is comprised of representatives of Chile’s most prominent law firms that are committed to providing pro bono services to a diverse range of environmental and social initiatives. The foundation invited Tierra Austral to speak at a forum devoted to the benefits and challenges of the Derecho Real de Conservación. The speakers included: Michael Grasty and Franco Acchiardo, from the law firm of Grasty Quintana Majlis, which has been a long-standing supporter of private lands conservation in Chile; Henry Tepper, a member of the Board of Directors of Tierra Austral; Martijn Wilder, a senior partner at the law firm of Baker & McKenzie Australia and director of WWF Australia; and Carolina Contreras, Executive Director of the Pro Bono Foundation.
