¡Building Knowledge! Learning about Camera Traps for monitoring activities
In August, Tierra Austral co-hosted a fascinating online workshop that was attended by several of the landowners who have taken the bold action of protecting their properties with Derecho Real de Conservación (DRC) agreements. We hosted the workshop with our friends at the environmental consulting firm Photosintesis, and the event focused on the use of camera traps to help monitor DRC-conserved private protected areas.
During the workshop, our landowner partners talked about their knowledge of the properties, with a special emphasis on the wildlife they have seen on their land. Our colleages at Photosintesis explained the use and importance of using camera traps to create a visual recording of the comings and goings on protected lands when there are no people around. The information gathered by camera traps is invaluable to efforts to create successful long-term management plans for these landscapes.
The landowners were very interested in the use of camera traps. Some have already placed this amazing piece of equipment on their properties, and Tierra Austral looks forward to working with our landowners to install many more. After all, who doesn’t want to see what kind of creature might be moving across their landscape at any time of the day or night?!
