PARTICIPATING IN THE GLOBAL CONGRESS OF THE ILCN
Representatives of Tierra Austral, along with more than 100 attendees, will participate in the second Global Congress of the International Land Conservation Network, which will be held in Santiago in January of 2018. The Congress is called “From Communities to Countries: Visionary Conservation in a Changing World,” and Tierra Austral is deeply involved in its planning. We are particularly excited about the Congress because it will be held in Chile, and it will provide Tierra Austral with a rich opportunity to share our success on the Derecho Real de Conservacion with colleagues from around the world, especially those from Civil Code countries.
SEMINAR AT THE 2017 LAND TRUST ALLIANCE RALLY (Denver, USA)
Tierra Austral joined other key leaders of the efforts to secure the passage of the Derecho Real de Conservacion, in making a presentation at the national Land Trust Rally. Participants in the panel presentation included: Michael Grasty from the Grasty Quintana Majlis law firm; Roberto Peralta from the Peralta Gutierrez Asociados law firm; Tierra Austral Board members Victoria Alonso and Henry Tepper; Pancho Solis, Director of the Pew Charitable Trust’s new program in Chile; and Jim Levitt from the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy and International Land Conservation Network, who served as the moderator. The presentation was well-attended and well-received by an audience comprised of both US conservation practitioners and representatives of the new European Land Conservation Network (ELCN).
FORUM FOR LAWYERS AND PRIVATE SECTOR REPRESENTATIVES
Tierra Austral participated in an event hosted by the Pro Bono Foundation, which is comprised of representatives of Chile’s most prominent law firms that are committed to providing pro bono services to a diverse range of environmental and social initiatives. The foundation invited Tierra Austral to speak at a forum devoted to the benefits and challenges of the Derecho Real de Conservación. The speakers included: Michael Grasty and Franco Acchiardo, from the law firm of Grasty Quintana Majlis, which has been a long-standing supporter of private lands conservation in Chile; Henry Tepper, a member of the Board of Directors of Tierra Austral; Martijn Wilder, a senior partner at the law firm of Baker & McKenzie Australia and director of WWF Australia; and Carolina Contreras, Executive Director of the Pro Bono Foundation.
TIERRA AUSTRAL BECOME A MEMBER OF THE LAND TRUST ALLIANCE
In June 2014, Tierra Austral became a member of the Land Trust Alliance, alliance of non-profit organizations with the mission of promoting voluntary land conservation and permanent protection through legal agreements with private landowners.
CHILEAN SENATE APPROVES THE GENERAL GUIDELINES OF THE REAL AND PROPERTY RIGHTS TO CONSERVATION (DERECHO REAL DE CONSERVACIÓN)
In May 7th, 2014, the Chilean senate approved the general guidelines of the draft legislation that creates the real and property right to conservation (or Derecho Real de Conservación). The approval was agreed by 29 vote in favor, none against and no abstentions. Now the draft must be analyzed by the mixed commissions of constitution and environment.
TIERRA AUSTRAL VISITED SONOMA LAND TRUST
In march 2014, the Executive Director of Tierra Austral, Gabriela Franco and the Board Member, David Tecklin visited the Sonama Land Trust, one of the biggest conservation organization in California. Tierra Austral staff and director went to California to learn about the Sonoma Land Trust projects, the private conservation strategy used to protect Mediterranean ecosystems and to explain the conservation in Chile. During this visit, Tierra Austral members also participated in the 2014 California Land Conservation Conference of Land Trust where they also presented the Chilean outlook in conservation.
